‘Soul Train’ Aims to Pull Into Broadway Station

“Rock of Ages” producer Matthew Weaver has acquired the stage rights to “Soul Train” with an eye toward turning the property into a Broadway musical.

The producer has already begun the hunt for a creative team for the new tuner, which would aim to capitalize on audience familiarity with the TV series that was a long-running tube spotlight for R&B, soul and hip-hop acts as well as for the troupe of dancers who performed on the show every week.

The potential adaptation looks poised to mirror the half-musical/half-party atmosphere conjured by the original stage production of “Rock of Ages,” while drawing on the appeal of a trove of familiar pop hits along the lines not only of “Rock of Ages” but also of “Motown” and of this season’s Carole King musical, “Beautiful.”
