Black Veteran Who Was Homeless Is Now A Harvard Student
Alicia Watkins is a retired Air Force staff sergeant who proudly served in Iraq and Afghanistan. She risked her life for the freedom of others, survived the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, and watched her colleagues die. But it wasn’t any of her combat experiences that broke Watkins’ spirit; it was the fact that she retired from the military and found herself homeless.

In 2010, Watkins’ allowed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to document her life as a homeless veteran. Her “kitchen” was a cardboard box of snacks and microwavable meals. Her bed was a car that she rented for $10 a day. Her restrooms were the toilets at various airport hotels.

I hate to be the one to break the news. But the woman who gave life to the talented actor, who said she emptied her retirement savings account so her only child would grow into a star, director, producer and playwright, claims she’s down on her luck.
Hattie Crawford Fishburne, 80, told me that, unable to pay the rent for several months, she’s received written notice informing her she’ll be evicted from her Los Angeles apartment Tuesday.
And she said she can’t reach her wealthy son, with whom she last spoke more than a year ago when his father died.

WTKR reports a 19-year-old Hampton University student reportedly committed suicide in the school?s on campus library.
Cullen Haviland, who hailed from Temecula, California, was found dead on Friday, March 27, 2015.
The site reports:
Haviland was a second year student who was actually classified as a senior because of his outstanding academic performance and credits he earned through advanced placement.
He was also involved with the National Society of Black Physics Students and the Society of Physics Students.
The school has provided grief counseling for students who may need it.
Officials say no foul play is expected at this time, but it is still early in the investigation.
